Thank you. When I learned Ashokan Farewell I played it about half speed but very accurately over and over. Then I sped it up a little. Eventually I could play it accurately at full speed. So what you are saying makes perfect sense.
It works! 👍
Wow, that was great! Your videos are so clear and pragmatic! Very helpful, thank you so much!
I'm left handed and just found a store who will make a left handed violin, but teachers in my area wont teach, so i'm learning myself. Always wanted to learn so here i go. Thanks for this/ these videos
Always glad to help and good luck!
Practice does NOT make perfect... Only perfect Practice makes perfect. Slow it down... Focus on form and technique.
Fiberglass Bows have improved over the years, Synthetic Bow Hair has also gotten updates
Helicore Strings have a Stranded Steel Core rather than a Solid Steel Core so it produces a sound that matches that of Synthetic Core Strings (the modern equivalent of Gut). Steel Core strings have gone under alot of improvements.
Helicore Strings are the only steel core strings that have the sound of a Synthetic Core (or Gut core) String because it's a stranded steel core.
Wittner Fine Tune Pegs would save us that issue
Awesome video! I will get these books.
Awesome video!! I recently started getting back to playing my violin and started to use the books. I was wondering how long or time frame should one take with each book And how would one know when to move on to then next level book? Thank you!!!
Well, that's a tough question because there's so many factors involved. Obviously, if you have some familiarity with music to begin with and you have a teacher, you will go through the books much more quickly and probably with better technique. However, if you on the opposite end of the scale and don't really have any musical experience and don't have a teacher then it'll probably take at least twice as long. When I was teaching the Suzuki books to my students, the average pace was one song every two weeks and they would be working on two songs at the same time. Therefore, they would learn the fundamentals of one piece and then polish it up the second week while they were learning the fundamentals of a new piece so there was always overlapping. This is a pace that's considered fairly quick but that was one of my specialties, was advancing students rapidly. So, I think 3 weeks per piece if you're working pretty hard should be totally sufficient. This is assuming that your fundamental technique is decent. Now, when the songs get much more complicated, like in later parts of book three and book four, then twice as much time we'll probably be needed to play the them at a decent level. Basically, you should be able to play the pieces at a reasonable pace without any major mishaps and be able to do that consistently before you'd want to move on to a new song. This sounds like a video I should make!
@@KennedyViolins awesome!!! thanks for your response!! A video would be great, but your response really helps with understanding the time frame
Wittner Geared pegs are installed like friction pegs, so you just swap out the old friction pegs w/ the Wittner geared pegs, no screws needed
Tradition has to change & actually to get more people to like the modern violin body designs, the historical instruments would have to have their body shapes altered
Wittner makes a stringing crank for these.
I've been trying to learn to play the violin myself. It's been hard trying to get started. I am struggling with identifying the notes
Well, remember that with the Suzuki series of books, you learn with fingerings and not notes and this speeds things up. And during this process, you can, regardless of which book you're using, write in some of the notes of the music that you're playing. This will help reinforce what the notes are. So, I would start with writing in the open strings notes on your music here and there and then filling in some other notes as you get better at it. Eventually, they'll be just a few notes that you won't identify immediately but it's a gradual process
I still go back to my Suzuki (Viola - the best of all instruments despite the moronic idiocy spread by TwoSet) books after I've taken time off from playing and use them to get myself back up to speed by quickly working through almost every song until I get back to the level I was at. I then continue to use the books to progress on from there. It really is such a good method for making progress in your playing.
I'm curious what violin you are playing
To tell you the truth I'm not exactly sure. I'm not in my studio right now but I think it's a David Yale violin or a Vitacek master series. Remember, I'm a violist so if a violinist was playing the violin I'm sure it would sound a lot better!
@@KennedyViolins Thanks. I'll look those up. I'm new to this channel, so I didn't know that you are a violist 😄
Could you do a review of the essential elements book 1 if you havent already? I think I will get the suzuki book 1 next month. I have recently got some beginner violin books, i've been playing for 2 months now. I'm using essential elements book 1 and I have got fiddle time joggers book.
Yes, I plan on doing a video on the essential elements books next. I know that that series of books is quite popular and we sell a lot of them.
Im at my first week of learning to play Violin, its alot of fun but i certainly dont sound that good😅 any tips?
Well obviously, it takes years to not sound bad for the most part. The point is, is that you want to be consistent with your practice and play a little bit everyday and you'll slowly get better. Remember, the violin is very hard in the beginning and then gets easier.
Pretty
My 250$ violin looks better
thats true ı have the suzuki book
Thank you for this video, Sir! This inspired me to finally consider learning the violin. I’m in my early 30s but really wanted to play the violin since I was a kid. We couldn’t afford it as I grew up poor but as an adult I can finally finance this dream of mine. Is it alright for me to start learning with a silent violin? My living arrangement does not allow me to make too much noise/ sounds and I probably couldn’t learn with an acoustic violin. Thank you and more power to you! 🙂
Ohhh, so that why today more and more prodigy come up.. Behind the prodigy there is techer who teach them to deliberate practice
Exactly. The more we learn about how the human mind works, the better we get at training it. Also, violin technique has improved because all the best techniques from around the world have been combined and kids are starting younger.
@@violaracer8168 thanks for your explanation
Thank you 😊
Is there a difference between 1/2 and 4/4 strings? Does 1/2 violin strings exist?
Yes, most manufacturers will specifically make strings for smaller violins. If you buy a set of strings from D'addario for example that are meant for quarter size violin, they will be quite a bit shorter than the strings for the full size. Not only are the strings shorter but they also wrap the strings with the threading differently, so they work properly with your pegs when you insert the strings.
@@KennedyViolins thank you so much for you quick answer and the explanation :) you're the best

String broke.
Oh no! Well, that happens. It's just a part of playing the violin. And besides, if you replace the string yourself, you'll get better and better at doing something that you'll have to do many times in the future. Good luck and happy practicing!
I hope I can get my bow repaired
Any bow can be repaired but some bows are not worth it, if they are too inexpensive of bows. You should consider the cost of a new Brazilwood bow and compare it to the cost of the re-hair!
I can't remember if I've ever seen dark horse hair on a bow. Is only one kind of horsehair used? For aesthetics or for the sound?
It supposedly has a better grip, but overall there aren't any pros or cons besides personal preference. There may be extra cost for dark though.
Does rosin dry clear? Or would it have a visible cloudiness to it that you otherwise can't see on white or that maybe even makes it whiter?
@MasterCrander it would be mostly clear if you over rosin it might appear
There are basically two areas that bow hair generally comes from. Either it comes from Mongolia or Russia. Professionals generally have a preference for one of the other. However, I'd say the majority of hair comes out of Mongolia. In terms of black hair versus white hair, generally the black hair is coarser and is only seen on cellos or bases. They often prefer to have course hair because of the thicker gauge of their strings.
Hello .. plz someone give a channel or videos to leran
STUNNING, BRILLIANT, ASTONISHING. FANTASTIC CRAFTSMANSHIP. I AM SPEECHLESS.
Beautiful
Pretty cool huh!
Hi .. how can i leran violin … do you have any videos from the start ?
Well, I don't have any videos that teach you how to learn violin from the very beginning specifically because there are many different ways to learn the violin and many things you have to learn. However, I do have a lot of videos about the best ways to learn the violin and I also offer exercises for everything you have to know about the violin, like the left hand right hand. etc. I would suggest that you check out my video that I recently did on the best violin beginner songs. That would probably be a good way to start if you don't have a teacher.
Thanks Joel, I needed to be reminded of this. I enjoy all of your videos. Thank you so much. 😊
Thanks for letting me know. Always glad to help!
Don't learn songs, learn to play tunes.
🤣
Wow stunning sound
Ya, electric violins sound very strange without an amp and some effects.
Suzuki is one of the beginning viola method books that I've been cycling through. Lots of fun. Today I breezed through volume 1 of the Sassmannshaus series, working hard at the big three: Posture, Intonation, and Tone. What struck me for the first time is how what seem like very simple pieces are shaping my hand frame, more than in other elementary methods. Anyway, I'd get bored sticking to only one book.
Yes, I"m doing a video later on the whole Suzuki series of books as well as comparing some other books. A lot of good stuff there. 😃
Thanks for your very helpful vids Joel. The Suzuki method seems to often be promoted towards kids but clearly very helpful for adult learners as well. Your comment about covering other books in the series sounds like a great idea.
Ya, I think that's coming up. 👍
I am so young 69 years old and learning to play violin with suzuki books
@@itzikovadia851 YES!!
@@itzikovadia851 Similar - 66 and given I can't afford a teacher at the moment, I'm using the Suzuki books to progress my viola playing. I supplement them with one or two other pieces (e.g. from books like Solos for 'Young' Violists) and a ton of scales and (when I can fit them in) Wohlfahrt etudes.
I dabble in both, but I prefer the gutsiness of the viola! 👨🏻
Can't argue...

@@jub8891 Glad to be of help!
You spelled remember incorrectly.
Oh no!! We need to proofread better. 👍
For open strings practice I used metal mute as in the initial period the sound was scratchy (it mutes around 85-90% of the sound). However I don't like the metal mute as it sits just a couple of millimetres on the bridge thereby blocking the view, which leads to angled bowing which is especially not good in the initial period. As I gained control over bowing & sound quality I started using only the Rubber mute, which goes down all the way and mutes around 45-50% of the sound. This ensure good feedback on the sound quality as well as doesn't block the view of bowing area. The only downside to rubber mute is that G string sounds funky, but for me a rubber mute scores over the metal one!
Yes, I hear that a lot. A lot of people don't like the fact that you can't really see your bow very well with the metal one. 👍
@@KennedyViolins Yep!
Yep, 66 yo - all good tips, and no 1 is a TEACHER. Then commit to your national examinations syllabus. It focussed your learning like nothing else! I like classical, but I love jazz and blues violin. But I need to get the formal training done (walking) so I can run!
Oh ya!!
Right on 👍

А цена? Хочу купить
The viola erasure of the other commenter is so offensive 🤣 Such an underrated, rich, depthful instrument. 🎻 She is gorgeous 😍
🤣
If you get a practice mute get a metal one. The rubber ones make your bridge turn black.
🤔
@@KennedyViolins Not literally black, just discolouration and dark marks.
@@Kargbo-Reffell_Music Ya, that makes sense. I haven't used these mutes a lot lately but I think I remember them leaving some marks on my bridges as well.
I'm a composer and my main instrument is the piano. I just got my first violin and its oh so hard
Ya, the piano is easy in the beginning and gets hard. Violin is hard in the beginning and gets easier. 🤪
@@KennedyViolins Haha! Trying my best.. can't even try scales before I perfect my bow hold
@@noamush Ok, well keep at it! Remember, your bow hold will not feel natural until you incorporate it with long bow strokes. If scales are too much, you can just practice open strings. Good luck!
